How to Choose a Siemens HMI: Basic Panels, Comfort Panels and Unified Panels | RSTL Automation technical guide

An HMI is the operator's window into a machine or process. Choosing one by screen size alone can create expensive integration problems. A practical selection considers the application complexity, environment, user interface requirements, communication architecture, engineering software and lifecycle plan.

Start with the application

For a simple machine with a limited number of screens, alarms and setpoints, a basic operator interface may be suitable. Complex production equipment can require more screen capacity, diagnostics, data handling, remote-access planning, ruggedness or a wider display. Write down what the operator must see and do before comparing product families.

Basic panels

Basic panels are commonly used for straightforward operator tasks where cost and simplicity are important. Check display size, touch versus key operation, network interface, power requirements and the engineering environment. A panel with the right physical dimensions can still be unsuitable if the project was created for a different platform.

Comfort panels

Comfort-panel applications typically need higher capability for machine visualization and operation. Review protection rating, display size, mounting cutout, interfaces and project compatibility. In harsh or washdown environments, enclosure, front protection and mounting details are as important as screen resolution.

Unified panels

Unified panels support modern visualization workflows and should be selected with their specific engineering and system requirements in mind. Confirm the exact panel family, display size, interfaces, project version and required software. Do not assume an older panel project will transfer without a reviewed migration plan.

Replacement HMI checklist

For an existing machine, provide:

  1. Complete MLFB/order number
  2. Front and rear photographs
  3. Display size and mounting-cutout measurements
  4. Power supply and network connection details
  5. Project backup and engineering software version, if available
  6. Any special requirements such as key operation, IP rating or hazardous-area approval

Protect the application before replacing hardware

Back up the project, document PLC communications and verify the replacement outside production where possible. HMI replacement can affect operator screens, alarm messages, recipes, language settings and network addressing. Treat it as a controlled change, not merely a display swap.
