A SINAMICS V20 fault code is a diagnostic signal, not a repair instruction. Repeatedly resetting a drive without identifying the cause can damage equipment, hide a process issue or create an unsafe restart. Use the drive's current operating instructions and the machine's lockout procedures as the authority for each fault.

Safe diagnostic workflow

Before touching the drive, follow site safety procedures and isolate energy where required. Record the displayed fault and alarm history, the operating state, motor load, supply conditions and any recent wiring or parameter changes. Then compare the exact fault code with the manual for the installed V20 variant.

Common fault categories

Overcurrent

Overcurrent can be associated with acceleration settings, motor cable faults, a jammed load, incorrect motor data, mechanical binding or an unsuitable drive/motor combination. Inspect the machine and wiring before altering parameters.

Overvoltage and undervoltage

Supply instability, deceleration energy, braking configuration, incoming power issues or incorrect settings can contribute to voltage-related faults. Measure safely and review the application duty cycle before replacing the converter.

Overtemperature

Temperature faults can result from blocked airflow, high ambient temperature, overloaded equipment, cooling problems or installation clearances. Check the cabinet, fan condition and load profile.

Motor or signal-related faults

Motor temperature, analog signal, fieldbus and external fault conditions may originate outside the drive. Review control wiring, sensors, communication settings and the connected PLC before concluding that the drive has failed.

Reset only after the cause is addressed

Clearing a fault may restore operation temporarily, but it does not correct the underlying issue. After corrective work, restart in a controlled condition and observe load, current, temperature and recurring alarms. Preserve a record for maintenance planning.

If testing confirms a failed converter, collect the complete MLFB, input/output ratings, motor details, control method, installed options and photos of terminals. Do not diagnose the drive in isolation

A converter responds to the electrical and mechanical system around it. A fault may be caused by a jammed pump, a changing load, poor airflow, supply instability, a failed sensor or PLC logic.
