Variable-frequency drives are central to pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers, compressors and machine axes. When a Siemens SINAMICS drive shows a fault, the visible code is only one part of the diagnosis. The correct response is to connect that code to the drive model, parameter set, motor, load and installation environment.

First, identify the exact drive

SINAMICS is a product family rather than one device. Always collect the complete MLFB, drive series, power rating, input voltage, output current, control method and installed options. A fault code table for one series may not apply to another, and an online list should never replace the operating instructions for the installed unit.

What to record before a reset

  • Exact fault and alarm code shown on the display or diagnostic tool
  • Time and operating state when the fault occurred
  • Motor speed, load and process conditions
  • Recent parameter, program, wiring or mechanical changes
  • Incoming supply voltage and cabinet temperature
  • Connected PLC, HMI and fieldbus status

This record often points to the real cause faster than replacing the converter immediately.

Frequent root-cause groups

Electrical supply and DC link

Supply loss, unstable voltage, phase issues or regenerative energy during deceleration can produce voltage-related diagnostics. Review the power system, braking arrangement and duty cycle.

Motor, cable and load

Overcurrent, overload and motor-temperature alarms can be caused by a stalled or overloaded process, incorrect motor data, a cable problem or insufficient acceleration/deceleration time. Check the mechanical system as well as the electrical equipment.

Cooling and environment

Blocked filters, failed fans, high ambient temperature and poor cabinet ventilation can cause thermal faults. Confirm clearances and cooling before returning the drive to service.

Control and communications

External interlocks, analog reference signals, PLC logic, fieldbus communication and safety circuits can all create a trip. Check the control source and command path before changing drive parameters.

Replacement is not the first troubleshooting step

If a replacement is required, match the full MLFB, electrical ratings, physical mounting, communication options and programmed parameters. A different drive can require re-engineering, commissioning and safety validation. For critical production systems, obtain an exact spare where feasible and keep the removed unit for evaluation or repair.

Create a drive incident record

For recurring faults, record time, code, production state, motor load, incoming voltage, ambient temperature and recent changes. Add screenshots from the HMI or drive tool if permitted. Comparing several incidents can reveal a pattern such as only failing during rapid deceleration, after a certain process stage or at high cabinet temperature.

Protect parameter data

Where permitted by site policy, retain an approved backup of the drive parameters before major changes or replacement. Record the drive MLFB, motor nameplate data, command source and communication setup. Parameter data is part of the machine configuration; a correctly sourced drive can still fail to perform correctly if its critical settings are missing.

FAQ: Can any drive of the same kW rating be used?

No. Matching power alone is insufficient. Input supply, overload duty, control method, feedback, communications, physical fit, safety features and parameters may all differ. Confirm suitability through the machine documentation and qualified engineering review.
